Mercedes-Benz 500 SEC BB “Magic Top”
This is a unique opportunity to acquire an incredibly significant piece of automotive history in the form of the Mercedes-Benz 500.SEC ‘Magic Top’ by Buchmann Brothers. The car featured in the October 2013 edition of “Mercedes Enthusiast” magazine, is a true classic in every sense. Built in single figures in the early 80’s, this was a car that was clearly aimed at the most discerning clients in Germany, the USA and Saudi Arabia due to the astronomical build cost at the time. (In 1983 a new 500 SEC was priced at 82,000 DM. The total price as seen here, including the bespoke interior was almost 300,000DM.)
This example, which has spent much of its life in Japan, remains in superb order throughout and would appear to support the recorded mileage of just 35,000km (22,000 miles). The stunning pearlescent white bodywork is straight and true and shows no evidence of accident damage or corrosion with only a very few tiny blemishes to the paintwork and period BBS alloy rims. The engine, gearbox and all running gear feel fresh and responsive and the dramatic Magic Top operates smoothly with the precision expected of the very finest, and most expensive in German engineering at the time.
The bespoke Blue Rainbow trim in suede-like (Alcantara) material is in excellent condition throughout with no broken stitching etc on the seats, dashboard, doors and centre console and the blue carpets in similarly fine order, with only some slight wear to the driver’s side armrest to indicate any appreciable use.
The Buchmann brothers took the expensive flagship Mercedes and added some very advanced technical innovations to produce the folding hard top which was at least a decade ahead of its time, and when combined with the striking interior produced a truly unique luxury sports coupe.
