Sellers original description:
1975 Volkswagen Golf Mk1.
MRX 601P is one of the earliest, most original and lowest mileage Golfs in worldwide known existence. Manufactured in December 1975 and first registered on the 1st March 1976, MRX 601P was first purchased from Goodliffe Garages Volkswagen dealer in Croydon by a Miss O.R. Best. Miss Best hardly used the car, indeed some years the car was only taken out of the garage for its annual MOT and Service at Goodliffe’s! To date MRX 601P, a Golf L, has only covered a genuine 20,000 miles (backed up by VW service history / all MOTs) – that is an average of around 600 miles a year! I have the complete documentation for MRX, down to the factory build slip, original sales brochure and early VW diagnostic computer print outs, even the running in sticker is in place on the windscreen.
Sitting in MRX is like going back in time, a hint of that new car smell still remains today. The period “Tabac” trim seats still feel firm, the carpet and headlining fresh from the factory. The spartan interior, typical of the early Golfs belies an entertaining drive. The gear change is as smooth as ever, taking you up and down the peppy 1.1’s engine revs. Everything works as it should except the clock. I haven’t fixed it so it remains frozen in time – like the car!
The original Ocean Blue paintwork (a unique colour for 1976 Model Year) is still in excellent condition. The car has not been welded, and nor does it require it. The sills are straight. The seats are not worn. The gearshift is still firm. The original wax remains. The car remains an RHD original 2 door example and NOT a restoration.
The car is SORN'd having been carefully dry stored since acquisition.
Chances like this don't come along often.
